Crate Training
The steps for successfully crate training your dog are:
1) Find the right size crate. This should be big enough for your puppy to lie down comfortably, with a toy or two. It should not however give your dog enough room to run around in. A good pet shop or vet will be able to help you with sizing.
2) Make the crate a home within your house. Put the blanket from the breeders in the crate or buy comfy bedding. Have your puppy’s favourite toy in the crate.
3) Always feed and water your puppy within the crate.
4) Get your pet used to the crate with toys, treats and building up to closing the door. For example have your dog in the crate whilst you are getting on with a chore within close proximity.
5) The philosophy around crate training is that your dog will not go to the toilet within his crate as a dog, by choice will not go to the toilet where he sleeps.
6) Judge the times that your pet needs to go to the toilet and put him in the crate for small periods of time around these.
7) Build up the amount of time that you pet is in the crate and use it for a place for your puppy to rest after exercise and play.
Make sure that you realise this training comes with the responsibility of taking your dog outside to the toilet. This can be combined with outdoor training if you have a garden, but do not wish your puppy to out alone in the house for fear of damage.

This is the best way to house train your dog and it will be a smooth process if you follow the below steps:
1) The best way to house train your puppy is to pre-empt any toilets inside. You will achieve this by knowing your pet’s toilet schedule but generally it is best to take them out to the garden area first thing when they wake, after breakfast, after lunch, after dinner and just before they go to bed.
2) When you take your dog outside for the toilet, do not play with them, but take a book and sit while they find their way. Just ignore them so they can relax and go to the toilet. This may be frustrating waiting at first but believe me in the long run it will prove worthwhile!
3) When your dog does go outside make sure you make a big fuss ‘good boy, good girl’ and clap and always give their favourite treat. This must be done instantly and at the spot at which they have gone to the toilet. Then welcome your pet back into the house.
4) Whilst this training is going on please leave your dog access to the garden, so if you are out pet can go of their own accord.
5) If your dog does go in the house and you see it, make a sound as if a child is putting their hand in a fire – ‘uh uh uh’ make it urgent and strong. You do not need to shout or scold. Your puppy will stop, pick them up and take outside where they will eventually finish. Then praise, using step 3.
6) If you do not see your dog go to the toilet, do not tell them off and use the steps as they will have no clue what they are being told of for. House training is not about rubbing dog’s noses in their toilet, it is about shoeing them what to do by praise and consequence.

Re-Call is an easy lesson for a dog to learn if you are consistent with the rules. As with most training, it is based on praise and consequence, not through shouting, scolding or contact. Re- call is an important part of your relationship with your dog, as it can build a unique bond of trust between owner and canine. If you always follow the rules below, then you will have a well trained dog that comes who comes when you call.
1) Recall training starts from the moment your puppy enters your house. Choose a name and stick to it. When your puppy arrives use the name followed by affection.
2) Within the first few weeks a puppy is not allowed to leave the home, so this is the perfect opportunity to start re-call training. Whenever you call your puppy and they come to you, praise them with a ‘good girl, good boy’ clap and give them a treat.
3) Go to a different room and call your puppy from there. If you have a private garden tries this outside. At this point there is no consequence for your puppy not coming to you as they are too young to understand.
4) When you finally leave to the park for your walk, make sure you have your dog’s favourite
treats.
5) When you reach then park, make your dog sit and give them a treat and let them off the
lead. Do not worry, as your dog is a puppy, you can move faster than they can, so you will not loose your dog. If you are very worried try the next steps in an enclosed area before venturing out.
6) The most important point is to not over-call your puppy. You must give them freedom in the park. If you do not obsess about your puppy being at your side, they will learn to follow you and you should not need to use their name at all.
7) A dog gets three chances to come to you and the only command is the dog’s name. For this
example we shall use rover:
• ‘Rover’ 1st call in a very friendly high warm voice
• ‘Rover’ 2nd call in a slightly more stern less warm voice
• ‘Rover’3rd call in a low stern tone
If your puppy comes to you on the first call make a huge fuss of him/her. Use ‘good girl, good boy’ and give them a treat. If your puppy comes on the second call, still make a huge fuss, but do not give your puppy the treat. If your puppy did not come on the first call, leave it 5 seconds and then try the second call. If this does not work, leave it another 5 seconds and use the third and final call.
If this doesn’t work go and retrieve the dog from where they are, sit down on their level look at them and say bad boy/girl. You must mean this though, do not shout but use a low authoritative voice. At this point do NOT put them on the lead, but take them by the collar out of the situation and continue your walk. Do not hold this grudge, you have carried out the steps and now your puppy is back to the beginning and the steps start again.
Always keep an eye on your dog, but do not let your dog know you are doing this. Never follow your dog or let him/her lead the walk. Also if you are going to get your dog to tell him no, do not treat this as a game. Do not run around after your dog. Merely go in calmly and quickly. If your dog does run off I suggest you go the opposite way slowly keeping a subtle eye on him/her and they will come running.
9) The golden rule is if you do loose your dog and they come back NEVER tell them off. Never
shout at a dog that has come back, as they may never do it again!
