Someone who had quit smoking several times, said with anguish, “No, I don’t want to quit smoking. I have done it on several occasions in the past— what I wish to do now is to kick smoking!”

Only when the resolution is that firm, can something tangible be achieved. All half-hearted measures are bound to fail! Ask any of the galaxies of smokers! Millions and millions! They want to give up smoking desperately. A smoker repeatedly thinks of giving up smoking!

There are several voluntary associations to help the smoker. Every small township generally has a health-care unit. But the unfortunate part of it is that, for every such unit, there are hundreds of small and big tobacco-products selling shops. The promotion campaign for these products goes on unabated, through newspapers, important periodicals, and TV channels (though it is banned to some extent) and the demand for tobacco products goes on increasing relentlessly.

Is it ever possible to quit smoking? Defeat nicotine?

Before trying to defeat your physical and psychological enemy, try to know its strength and to what extent it has taken hold of you because its destructive capacity is no less than additives such as heroin or cocaine.

Remember, in the blood of a hard smoker, each and every cell is surcharged with nicotine. It has become part of the blood. Therefore, pregnant mothers -beware! Your smoking is injurious not only to your health; it is dangerous for the tender baby within. Your smoking alone is responsible for this double tragedy.

With the failure of the first attempt to quit smoking, one should not get disheartened! Simply thinking routinely is not going to solve the problem. Resolute actions must follow. The courses run by the health care centers and hospitals may help you by way of information. But, ultimately remember that, it is you who have to quit smoking, for it is you who started smoking. You can build yourself or you can break yourself. That depends upon your will power.

Each withdrawal symptom is powerful and difficult to endure. At times you feel that the only way to get over them is to smoke- just one. If you succumb and slide, then it is doubly difficult to restart the pilgrimage to the smoke-free zone. So, with lots of determination, this dizziness, depression, irritability, anger headache, restlessness and trouble in concentrating will have to be tackled! But confront nicotine with a challenging poster. Which is better- your company with wrinkled skin, bad breath, bad smelling of hair, black teeth with cavities, and black lips or a glowing skin and a confident sparkling countenance?

Mark Twain said, “Quitting smoking is easy. I have done it a thousand times.” But please remember, Mark Twain has not told you to follow him. Your will power could be stronger than his!

Almost everybody knows that smoking is bad for the health. Images of blackened lungs line school hallways and hospital waiting rooms, but despite this people continue to take up smoking. This may have to do with the pervasive romantic image of smoking — an image that has nothing in common with reality.

There are many ways to take tobacco. You can chew it, inhale it through the nose, and smoke it in the form of cigars or cigarettes. No matter how it’s taken it is dangerous, but because smoking is the most popular way to consume tobacco it has also received the greatest attention from the medical field and the media.

When a smoker inhales a puff of cigarette smoke the large surface area of the lungs allows nicotine to pass into the blood stream almost immediately. It is this nicotine “hit” that smokers crave, but there is a lot more to smoke than just nicotine. In fact, there are more than 4000 chemical substances that make up cigarette smoke and many of them are toxic.

Cigarette smoke is composed of 43 carcinogenic substances and more than 400 other toxins that can also be found in wood varnish, nail polish remover, and rat poison. All of these substances accumulate in the body and can cause serious problems to the heart and lungs.

Cancer is the most common disease associated with smoking. Smoking is the cause of 90% of lung cancer cases and is related to 30% of all cancer fatalities. Other smoking-related cancers include cancers of the mouth, pancreas, urinary bladder, kidney, stomach, esophagus, and larynx.

Besides cancer, smoking is also related to several other diseases of the lungs. Emphysema and bronchitis can be fatal and 75% of all deaths from these diseases are linked to smoking.

Smokers have shorter lives than non-smokers. On average, smoking takes 15 years off your life span. This can be explained by the high rate of exposure to toxic substances which are found in cigarette smoke.

Smokers also put others at risk. The dangers of breathing in second-hand smoke are well known. Smokers harm their loved ones by exposing them to the smoke they exhale. All sorts of health problems are related to breathing in second-hand smoke. Children are especially susceptible to the dangers of second-hand smoke because their internal organs are still developing. Children exposed to second-hand smoke are more vulnerable to asthma, sudden infant death syndrome, bronchitis, pneumonia, and ear infections.

Smoking can also be dangerous for unborn children. Mothers who smoke are more likely to suffer from miscarriages, bleeding and nausea, and babies of smoking mothers have reduced birth weights or may be premature. These babies are more susceptible to sudden infant death syndrome and may also have lifelong health complications due to chest infections and asthma.

It is never too late to give up smoking, even those who have smoked for 20 years or more can realize tremendous health benefits from giving up the habit.

Have you ever gotten yourself in a situation where you have quitted smoking for perhaps 1, 2 or 3 weeks, sometimes even months or years only to find yourself crawling back to square one as it if it was a snake and ladder board game?

You find yourself picking up the cigarette and lighting it away again? I have to admit. I did. That is because I was lacking of something, of which I had to learn the hard way. And maybe this is perhaps why I am sharing my experience with you so you could avoid this mistake in the future.

I’m sure you would know that most of time, smokers use the excuse of “releasing stress” to smoke. For some reason, this “release stress” has become a reality which in fact is not. The only reason you feel relaxed are due to the soothing of the nicotine addiction. The fact is… you do not need cigarettes in your life!

The problem: Many have associated cigarettes can actually release stress that it became the truth.

So after awhile, when a person which is going through the process on quitting smoking is incapable of handling stress, guess what he turns to? Cigarettes!

The solution for this is, not only must you quit smoking, you must also:

Find The Alternatives For Relaxation And To Release Stress!

When you have established this simple concept, you are more capable of handling stress from other methods rather than turning back to the dark side of the road.

Among the ways of alternatives for relaxation and releasing stress are:

•	Exercise
Somehow people get turn off this word alone. By nature, did you know that our human body needs exercise regularly at least twice a week? But somehow in this modernize world, exercise is deemed uncommon. My personal favorite is swimming. It really relaxes me to the full potential and enables me to get a good night sleep without disturbance.

•	Meditation
Meditation techniques such as Tai Chi and Yoga has been proven for hundreds of years to have positive effect and to boost one’s energy

•	Take A Hot Bath
Pamper yourself by taking a hot bath with light music at the background at dim lights.

•	Reading
A good way to “escape from reality” for a moment and to entertain yourself.

•	Listen To Comedies
Have you not known by now that laughter is the best medicine?

•	Massage And Spa
Splendid way of relaxing and releasing decades of stress accumulated.

I’m sure you get the picture by now. Whatever it is, make sure you have an alternative to relax and release stress instead of finding “the” excuse of turning back to cigarettes. It may sound simple, but very effective. Try it and you’ll be surprised how all those can help you on the journey to be smoke-free forever.

Cigarette smoking has been strongly linked to ailments such as heart disease, lung cancer, and other respiratory and circulatory diseases. However, there are several other cancers that can be developed because of cigarette smoking such as bladder cancer. Bladder cancer affects about 53,000 thousand individuals across the United States and smokers are twice more likely to get lung cancer than non-smokers.

Cigarette smoke contains more than 4,000 chemicals, 60 of which are highly carcinogenic. Smoking means exposing oneself to chemicals like hydrogen cyanide, butane, nicotine, carbolic acid, ammonia, and other harmful chemicals. As these substances are inhaled, they are absorbed into the lungs and eventually into the bloodstream. The blood then gets filtered by the kidneys and is incorporated in the urine. These carcinogens damage the urothelial cells that line the bladder walls and cause the development of tumors.

In some cases, bladder cancer often causes no symptoms until it has reached an advanced cure that may be difficult to cure. Noticeable symptoms of bladder cancer are non-specific, which means that these conditions may be linked to other health conditions other than cancer. Some of the symptoms of bladder cancer include the following:

Presence of blood in the urine;
Pain or burning sensation during urination without the occurrence of urinary tract infection (UTI); and
Urinating more often or feeling the strong urge to urinate without producing much urine.

Because of modern technology and advanced medicine, treatments for bladder cancer are now widely available. Treatment depends on the stage of the disease, the type of cancer, and the patient’s overall health. Surgery, chemotherapy, radiation, and immunotherapy are some of the common methods performed to treat this kind of cancer. However these treatments may produce a number of side effects that may affect one’s sexual health. These treatments may cause certain signs and symptoms that may make sexual intimacy with one’s partner more difficult. But this does not mean that a healthy sex life after cancer treatment cannot be achieved. Doctors should be consulted for possible remedies for these conditions.

Some sexual health problems that may be caused by cancer treatment may include the following:

Inability to achieve or maintain an erection (erectile dysfunction)
Difficulty climaxing
Orgasm without discharge of semen (dry orgasm)
Weaker, less satisfying orgasms
Loss of libido
Pain during sex

The development of different kinds of cancers that are linked to cigarette smoking have made the need to quit smoking more important. Despite the availability of many methods for cancer, people can drastically lessen the risks of developing bladder cancer by quitting cigarette smoking — a goal that might be easier said than done for certain individuals. These individuals may use various quit smoking products like nicotine gums, patches, and others that are out in the market. These products are scientifically proven to aid individuals who want to quit smoking. These products work by temporarily supplying the body with nicotine through means other than cigarettes. This helps calm physical withdrawal symptoms of cigarette smoking. Using these products and coupling them with the right attitude a sure formula for the prevention of bladder cancer and improve one’s overall health and well-being.

The addiction to smoking, which implies addiction to the substance nicotine has several components. The better one is aware of these components and understand them, the better is the chance for succeeding in stopping the smoking habit. Here is a survey of the components that addiction to smoke consist of.

THE SOCIAL COMPONENT

To some extend the habit of smoking is a product of socialization. Socialization is simply the tendency to repeat patterns of behaviour one sees other persons in the society exhibit. Socialisation is one major way children and young people learn social skills. Children and teenagers learn skills necessary to live and work in the society by a socialisation process. Unfortunately also bad habits and bad ways of thinking are learned the same way.

If one lives or works together with other smoking individuals, one will more or less automatic adopt these individuals’ smoking habits. If one then tries to break out of the social structure, one will feel anxiety for not being accepted any more by the social group one is a part of.

If the other individuals also make moves to threaten or freeze out an individual trying to brake this bad social standard, the difficulty of breaking out of the habit will be even greater. The threatening actions may not even be very serious to frighten a person from braking out of such a socially standardized habit, and may not even be meant as a threat.

THE NEED FOR SUCKING AND CHEWING

Every person have a need for sucking and chewing. This need is necessary in early infanthood, but it also persists into adult life to some degree. Some persons use cigarettes or other smoking devices and the smoke as a means to satisfy this need. There is a hypothesis that this need is greater by some adults then by others because this need, or some other similar basic need, has not been fully satisfied in early infanthood.

If you want to stop smoking, you can try to satisfy this need by other means, for example by always keeping something in your pocket that you can put in your mouth to chew at when the need for smoke appears.

AUTOMATIC REPEATING

When a person have done something many times and frequently enough, there will be created a pattern of automatic repetition of that particular behaviour. This is especially true if the particular action is done in a distinct recognizable situation.

The pattern of automatic repetition also have the effect of making a person feel safer in the daily life and routines.

Such a pattern of automatic repetition is always a component in the smoking habit. It you want to quit smoking, you should make an investigation to find out in which situations and which environments you usually take a cigarette.

Then try to avoid these situations or environments where you use to smoke, or to deliberately alter these situations.

NICOTINE USED AS A SELF MEDICATION

Nicotine has a tranquilizing effect upon nervous feelings. At the same time it has some anti-depressive effect, at least in the short run, and it makes a person feel more awake. A person suffering from nervousness or from depressive symptoms may feel that the smoking helps him against his mental symptoms.

However, gradually there will be a need for steadily higher doses of nicotine to give these good effects, and if there is a lack of nicotine in the body, the nervous or depressive feelings will be greater than before.

This gratification, but with the need for steadily higher doses to get the good effects is a major incentive for the smoking habit. You should consider if this anti-depressive or tranquilizing effect is a reason for your smoking. Then you should try to find other ways to achieve the same effect. Engaging in some sport or outdoor life will often make you feel less depressed. If the depressive feelings are more serious, some appropriate treatment can be necessary.

THE PLEASURE COMPONENT

There is to some degree a plain and direct pleasure connected with smoking. This pleasure is in itself a good effect. This good effect is probably in most cases too small compared to the painful effects of smoking, but will gives a temptation for an individual to continue the habit. However, also this pleasure effect will gradually be difficult to obtain without increasing the doses.

If the plain pleasure of smoking is a main reason for your habit, then you should try to find other sources of pleasure instead, for example some good food, some good music or some erotic action.

THE GENETIC COMPONENT

Not all people get equally easy dependent of nicotine. There are factors yet not fully understood that make some people more easily addicted than others. Perhaps some persons have receptors on their nerve cells that more easily get trigged by nicotine than others, or perhaps some people have more receptors with the ability to get trigged by nicotine, and this is inherited in the genetic code.

THE NERVOUS MECHANISMS WORKING BY ADDICTION

The normal brain has signal substances with a tranquilizing effect, and substances with a stimulating effect upon nerve cells. Like most narcotic substances, nicotine act like a signal substance by fitting into receptors on some brain cells.

Nicotine attaches itself to some receptors and thus give the nerve cell having these receptors a signal. The cells getting such a signal from nicotine, will react by secreting another signal substance, dopamine that influence still other cells. Dopamine will tranquilize some brain cells and stimulate others, and the total effect of this is the pleasurable effects of smoking.

However, when nicotine steadily induces dopamine release, the brain will gradually decrease the production of dopamine when nicotine is not present, and the brain will feel a steadily greater need for nicotine to work normally and feel well.

It is estimated that 70 percent of smokers want to quit, it’s no wonder that there are many quit smoking products and programs out that are designed for these individuals. These are scientifically-proven quit smoking programs that have gotten the nod of many health professionals. However, using these products may not be that effective and may bring side-effects. For this reason, many alternative therapies are out to help many individuals in their desire to be nicotine-free. These alternative methods are considered by many as safe and effective way of quitting smoking.

Acupuncture

Medical studies show that acupuncture may increase the levels of endorphins in the body. Endorphins are opiate-like substances in the body that are known elevate the mood and bring moments of relaxation. These factors may lower the cravings for that stick or pack of cigarette. Many health professionals recommend at least four sessions of acupuncture during the first month of quitting.

Herbal remedies

There are no herbs that contain nicotine. However, there are herbs like chamomile that has a calming effect that may help one’s transition to life as a non-smoker. The calming effect of this herb may help one cope with stressful situations that may lead one to light a cigarette. However, individuals who want to try this herb should seek the approval of a health professional because it might produce an allergic reaction and interact with other drugs.

Hypnosis

Smokers have natural cigarette triggers. Factors like driving, eating, watching TV, and stress may entice individuals to smoke. In addition to exercise, eating regular meals and cutting down fat in one’s diet may aid in the management of blood sugar changes associated in quitting smoking.

Massage

Having a massage may promote better moods and less anxiety which may lead to fewer and less nicotine cravings. A University of Miami Touch Research Institute suggested that a two-minute hand or ear massage may curb nicotine cravings and, therefore, cut daily cigarette intake.

Research Before Your Leap

The proliferation of stop smoking injection clinics means there is money from cigarette smokers who want to quit. Unfortunately, there are several questionable clinics and people should be wary of these before signing up for a treatment. If you get flyers and read posters about guaranteed one-time visit treatments, think twice. Smoking cessation treatments are not that simple. Nobody can erase years of abuse with just one stop smoking injection.

A stop smoking injection uses atarax and scopolamine followed up with pills and nicotine patches. To reinforce the therapy, group support sessions and educational materials will be provided. However, if you go to the various websites claiming successful cures, there are no offsite links. A scam page uses the same reference to appear legit but does not have supporting external links. The one-time stop smoking injection clinics have identical scientific references, which need to be verified and checked against scientific journals.

What To Watch Out For

Since stop smoking injection treatments will cost roughly $400 or more, play smart. Do not go for come-ons like 50% off, university studies, patents, and money back guarantees. However, these may just be poor marketing strategies.

Look out for Atarax. This drug is a potent antihistamine. Atarax injections could trigger stronger body reactions. Just think. An Atarax pill can result to severe allergic reactions, what more could an injection do? Scopolamine and atarax work on the nervous system long enough to straighten out the brain chemicals. These drugs can be dangerous if not used properly. Of course, it is better to be cautious than wallow in regret later.

What Worked for Joe May Not Work For Dick

Not all stop smoking injection programs are scams, though. Several have worked fine and many patients swear they are off nicotine. One successful reformed smoker saw an ad for a treatment using atropine and scopolamine. The injections were administered on the ear and on the hips. The whole exercise cost about $450. He followed up the injections with pills and patches. Soon enough, he was off the habit. For 6 years now, he has not touched a single cigarette. Others complain that the treatment were unsuccessful. But as the veterans say – there is no fast and easy cure for nicotine addiction, and a one shot stop smoking injection is not plausible.

Another version of the stop smoking injection treatments use small amounts of Vitamin B complex shots. The shot is accompanied with a numbing formula and are injected at acupuncture points on the earlobes and near the nose. Patients have achieved success and those who feel they need another shot can have it.

Just an Afterthought

If you are willing to be subjected to stop smoking injection therapies, then find out if these are FDA approved. Better still, discuss this concern with your doctor. Always bear in mind that quitting, no matter what treatments are available, will still need your self control and determination. When it comes to smoking cessation, when there’s a will, there’s a way.

Everyone is well aware of the dangers that smoking can bring. It is highly addictive since it contains nicotine, which is very addictive. Like heroine or any other recreational drugs, both the body and mind can quickly become used to the nicotine in cigarettes — a substance that eventually becomes necessary to ingest to make a smoker feel good. A lot of people smoke regularly, for a variety of reasons. Peer pressure, curiosity, and family members who smoke can expose a young adult to cigarettes and smoking. Little do they know about the harsh effects that smoking can bring to a person’s health, especially to the lungs.

Statistics have shown that nine out of ten tobacco users started smoking before the age of eighteen. Most adults who started smoking during their teen years would never expect to become addicted. This fact is not known by all smokers or for people who would want to try smoking. Naturally, if a person starts smoking, their lifestyle slowly changes, bringing in smoking as one of their pastimes.

People who smoke cigarettes or any other forms of tobacco does not consciously think about its consequences. They light a cigarette when waking up just to have the nicotine rush. This nicotine-induced rush helps them get rid of drowsiness. This can be habit forming, especially for those people who cannot wake up as fast as others. Smokers also light up a cigarette after eating, since this can eliminate any hunger pangs that they may have or crave. It stops the feeling of hunger, and eventually makes the person feel full. Other people smoke when they are bored. This usually happens when they wait for someone, or when they are on breaks at work or in school, or just to pass the time away. Either way, smoking can change one’s lifestyle, but unfortunately for the worse.

For people with family members who smoke, it is best that the family members themselves provide the assistance needed to help the smoker quit this farmful habit. Of course, it would not be an easy task at all. Nicotine is addictive, and people who smoke really crave for that nicotine rush, even if they know its bad for them. One should not make a person quit smoking just like that, for it brings withdrawal symptoms. Uneasiness, restlessness, irritability, and aggressiveness often comes when cigarettes are not around. Tagged as “cold turkey”, these people who quickly quit smoking can really behave differently from how they used to when they were still smoking.

In order to help loved ones who smoke, people should talk to their loved ones about the dangers and consequences that smoking can bring. It is important that the person who smoke would want to stop smoking, so that quitting can be a lot easier. Try and purchase self-help books that teach quitting techniques that do not involve “cold turkey” methods. They have guidelines and ways to avoid smoking including such alternatives as eating carrots, and any other nibblets when they feel the need to smoke. Think of having a smoke-free home rule where no one is allowed to smoke inside the house. This can help the smoker slowly realize that smoking is just a waste of time and effort, and that there are other things to do besides smoking. Getting them to attend therapy sessions could also help. But at the end of the day, only the smoker can decide to stop smoking since it is the smoker’s will to quit and concern for his health that will lead to such a life-saving decision.

Cough, fever, sore throat, chills, and breathing problems. Individuals who are experiencing these symptoms may already have bronchitis. Bronchitis is a lung ailment that is characterized by an inflammation of the air passages between the nose and the lungs. In some cases, the trachea or windpipe may become infected. The infection of the trachea eventually leads to breathing difficulties. Bronchitis can be caused by a variety of factors like viral and bacterial infection and cigarette smoking. Because of the effects of cigarette smoke in the development of bronchitis, the need to quit smoking has been more important than ever. Understanding this bronchitis and other factors that may affect this condition is critical in prevention and treating it.

There are two types of bronchitis: acute bronchitis and chronic bronchitis. Acute bronchitis is usually caused by a viral or bacterial infection that and may heal without causing any complications. Chronic bronchitis, on the other hand, is a sign of a serious lung ailment that cannot be cured but can only be slowed down or managed in terms of symptom alleviation. Both forms of bronchitis are both inflammations of the air passages but their respective causes and treatments are different.

Acute bronchitis is most widespread during the cold season. It is usually follows a viral infection, some cases of this disease may be accompanied by a secondary bacterial infection. Acute bronchitis, like other upper airway inflammatory ailment may increase a person’s risk of developing pneumonia. Common symptoms of this kind of bronchitis may include: wheezing, coughing, chest pains, and sore muscles. Chronic bronchitis, on the other hand, is caused by inhaling bronchial irritants like cigarette smoke, chemical fumes, air pollution, and environmental irritants like mold or dust. This disease develops slowly, middle aged and older individuals have heightened risks of getting diagnosed with bronchitis. Symptoms of chronic bronchitis may include wheezing, expectorating cough, chest pains, and persistent fatigue.

There are many treatments that are prescribed by many health professionals in treating bronchitis. Acute bronchitis can be treated like a common cold but only when there is no secondary infection. Self-medication and home care may include plenty of rest, intake of water and other fluids, and having a smoke-free lifestyle. Individuals with bronchitis can also acetaminophen for fever and pain that may be developed because of this condition. If secondary infection is present, in can be treated with antibiotic as prescribed by doctors. Stopping medication without doctors prescription may lead to the re-development of the infection.

Common treatments for chronic bronchitis is more complicated than acute bronchitis and can may depend on the stage of chronic bronchitis. Lifestyle changes is critical in treating this ailment. Individuals with bronchitis are advised to quit smoking, avoid second hand smoke, and other pollutants. Regular and moderate exercise are also important in treating this condition. Drug therapy which includes the use of bronchodilators which are muscle relaxants of the bronchial tubes that helps increase air flow. This medication can be taken orally or by using a nebulizer, a device that delivers medication through the airways.

However, like other kinds of health conditions, prevention is better than cure. The best way to prevent the development of bronchitis is not to begin or quit smoking. Smokers have high risks of dying from bronchitis and other pulmonary illness. In addition to this, smokers who stopped smoking show improvement in lung function and overall health. Avoiding chemical and environmental irritants like air pollution and secondhand smoke are essential for overall health.
